In 2028-2031, the Russian Ministry for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Relief (EMERCOM) plansto build an Arctic Aviation Rescue Center in the township of Dikson. The announcement was made by Emergencies Minister Alexander Kurenkov during an inspection of infrastructure in the country’s northernmost community.According to the ministry’s press service, the new Arctic center will include a fire station as well asrescue units operated by EMERCOM, the Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport and the Federal Medical-Biological Agency. A helicopter hangar will also be built.“Developing a network of Arctic rescue centers along the Northern Sea Route is a strategic priority for EMERCOM. This is the edge of our country – our Far North. People live and work here, and they need emergency assistance and rescue services just as much as anywhere else,” Alexander Kurenkov said.At present, Dikson is served by a standalone fire and rescue station operated by EMERCOM’s Directorate for the Krasnoyarsk Territory.The future Arctic Aviation Rescue Center will be staffed jointly by personnel from EMERCOM, the Federal Medical-Biological Agency and the Marine Rescue Service. Earlier, the ministry announced the opening of Arctic emergency rescue centers in Yamal and Pevek.
