Experts discussed prospects for developing Far Eastern and Arctic ports at the Eastern Economic Forum session “Extending the Northern Sea Route’s Navigation Window: Fleet, Infrastructure, and Market Readiness.”Deputy Minister of Transport Alexander Poshivai outlined five key tasks facing the Ministry to extend the navigation period in the Far Eastern Federal District and improve its efficiency.Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Area Vladislav Kuznetsov also spoke about the benefits of extending the navigation period on the NSR. In his view, a longer navigation season would boost the region’s export potential.“This will bring an inflow of funds that will benefit the economy and significantly increase the competitiveness of goods produced in Chukotka,” Kuznetsov said.He added that extending the navigation season would help lower food prices and reduce construction time for residential buildings and social infrastructure.Foreign partners have also recognized the Northern Sea Route’s considerable potential. Ke Jin, CEO of Chinese shipping and logistics company NewNew Shipping, once again highlighted the successful delivery of 500 shipping containers from China to the port of Murmansk in August. He said that China plans to attract more shippers to the route in the future.“We are confident that in the summer of 2027 we will be able to transport more than one million metric tons of cargo. We want to build vessels together with our Russian partners and are ready to help our Russian colleagues build vessels for transportation between Russia and China,” Ke Jin said.He also added that the Chinese side was ready to support the development of the ports of Arkhangelsk and Murmansk in order to make navigation along the Northern Sea Route year-round.

“First is to develop port capacity and coordinate rail and road connections to ports. Second is to modernize key ports and construct new terminals. Third, we need to improve the reliability of Northern Deliveries. Fourth, we need to accelerate the renewal of the river fleet and dredging equipment. And finally, fifth, we need to work on multimodal transport hubs,” he said.
