Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic Alexei Chekunkov said that the new Far East Development Strategy through 2036 will be signed shortly. He made the announcement during The Future – Anticipate or Create? A Development Strategy for the Far East session at the Eastern Economic Forum.“I am expecting information from the Government House of the Russian Federation that Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has signed the Far East Development Strategy. This is an extremely important policy document for us, which we discussed in great detail with members of the State Duma and the expert community. Of course, we also worked it through with all the regions,” Alexei Chekunkov said.The minister outlined three key areas underpinning the strategy: infrastructure development, building the economy of the future, and improving quality of life.According to Chekunkov, the construction of roads, bridges, rail facilities and ports should be aligned with the specific needs of the regions.His view was echoed by another participant in the session, Vasily Orlov, Governor of the Amur Region. Construction of the combined road-and-rail Jalinda-Mohe bridge across the Amur River is set to begin in the region soon. The new crossing will open the Mohe-Naiba transport corridor, providing access to the Lena River and the Northern Sea Route.“Another important international logistics project is the Jalinda-Mohe international bridge. We are currently working on it jointly with the Government of Yakutia. What makes it particularly interesting is that it will essentially open up a new Mohe-Naiba transport corridor, providing access to the Northern Sea Route via the Lena River. It will be a combined road-and-rail bridge,” Vasily Orlov said.Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov also spoke about the region’s infrastructure achievements. Around 100,000 square meters of housing will be built in Vilyuchinsk, Kamchatka, home to the Pacific Fleet’s largest nuclear submarine base.“For the first time in the past decade, we have secured targeted government support that will allow us to build a long-awaited sports and fitness complex, renovate roadsandplaygrounds, and refurbish cultural centers. We have also made a crucial strategic decision: housing construction is about to begin. A total of 100,000 square meters of housing will be built in Vilyuchinsk. The decision has already been made, and we are now identifying suitable land plots and addressing organizational issues,” Vladimir Solodov said.The region is also implementing other housing programs. This spring, for example, more than 260 people in Kamchatka obtained new apartments under an affordable rental housing program.Vladimir Solodov also highlighted improved transport connectivity across the Russian Far East thanks to the implementation of a flat-rate airfare program, which has made travel to Moscow more accessible for residents of the Far Eastern Federal District.“Flat-rate fares to Moscow represent a tremendous change,not only in terms of simply being able to travel, but also in the way people in the Far East see themselves. We have traditionally referred to other parts of the country as the ‘mainland,’ but in reality, that mindset hasalready changed,” Vladimir Solodov said.He added that he believes the next step should be to introduce flat-rate fares for travel within the Far East and connect the capitals of the Far Eastern regions with Vladivostok. Such an initiative would help residents see the macroregion as a single entity.“I think this would be very important. It would also break down that psychological barrier and, in a sense, allow us to see the Far East as a unified region,” the Kamchatka governor said.
