Russian Deputy Prime Minister - Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy in the Far Eastern Federal District, Yury Trutnev, chaired a meeting of the Council of the Far Eastern Federal District. The meeting participants focused on the state of the timber industry, updated the macro-region’s development plans and searched for new solutions in using the potential of the Far East, as per the press service of the Staff of the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy in the Far Eastern Federal District.
The meeting of the Council of the Far Eastern Federal District was held in the Primorye Territory. Attendees included the heads of all Far Eastern regions, representatives of federal and regional government agencies.
The state of the timber industry became a high-priority issue of the agenda. Despite a ban on round timber exports, in-depth timber processing volumes did not increase, contrary to expectations. Specific measures were introduced for expanding domestic output. “Unfortunately, economic indicators show that this project has failed. We banned round timber exports, but there is no increase in processing volumes. Let us see what is going on, why the timber industry is stalling, and what should be done in order to normalize everything,” Yury Trutnev noted.
The Plenipotentiary Envoy instructed regional heads to analyze, in great detail, what obstacles prevent the development of enterprises and hamper production and to chart solutions which will help make the industry resilient once again.
The meeting participants also discussed measures to update plans for the socio-economic development of the Far East, in the context of the changing economic situation.
