The ceremony of naming an Arctic gas-carrier Konstantin Posyet was held at the Zvezda ship-building complex in the Primorye Territory. Konstantin Posyet is now the second vessel in the series of Arctic tankers-gas carriers transporting liquified natural gas.
According to the regional government’s press service, a tanker of the ARC 7 ice class is capable of overcoming more than two-meter-thick ice independently, without an icebreaking escort. Its length is 300 m, and its capacity is more than 172,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.

"New vessels like Konstantin Posyet are to provide for a reliable and non-interrupted work of the Northern Sea Route, enhance the country’s energy security and promote the economy in the Far East,” said First Deputy Governor and head of the Primorye Territory Government Vera Shcherbina.

The name of Konstantin Posyet was not chosen by chance: it is a tribute to a prominent state and military leader of Russia, an Adjutant General and explorer of the Far East, who made a great contribution to studying and developing Russia’s Pacific frontiers.
Prime Minister of Russia Mikhail Mishustin addressed the participants in the ceremony. In his welcoming remarks he noted that high-technology tankers are most efficient for operations in the harsh conditions of the Arctic. Their increased maneuverability and high ice class enable them to overcome two-meter-thick ice independently, without an icebreaking support.
“Implementation of the project make it possible to solve the tasks set by the President to ensure a stable year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route, stable shipment of foreign trade cargoes and achievement of technological leadership,” underscored the Prime Minister in his greeting message.
