Exhibition The Great Northern Expedition: the Arctic as Art opened in Moscow

The exhibition dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Northern Sea Route development by Russia was opened in the Atom pavilion at VDNKh. Aide to the President of Russia and Chairman of the Maritime Board Nikolai Patrushev sent a message of greetings to the guests and organizers of the exhibition.

“The coverage of historic events in developing the Arctic, showing its potential, including as part of the project The Great Northern Expedition: the Arctic as Art has a significant cultural and socio-political importance. It helps unite Russian society, enhance the rising generation’s respect to the country’s cultural and historical heritage,” he stressed.

The Chairman of the Maritime Board pointed out that by the Presidential decision Russia is holding many events in connection with this anniversary.

“This year we also mark the 80th anniversary of the nuclear industry. Thanks to its nuclear-powered icebreaking fleet, the only one in the world, Russia has been and remains the leader in developing the Arctic regions,” noted Nikolai Patrushev.

The exhibition visitors can see pictures devoted to the Arctic, go on an excursion and watch the film about the history of the Northern Sea Route, as well as to take part in games and workshops.

In the digital exposition area guests can follow the 500-year timeline of the Northern Sea Route and in the VR-zone step into the shoes of members of the Otto Schmidt’s famous expedition on SS Chelyuskin, make a virtual voyage on a Project 22220 nuclear icebreaker and enjoy natural landmarks of the North.
