Scientists describe about 3,000 words of Kamchatka dialect, while compiling online dictionary

Linguists from Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University have prepared 76 texts with a total volume of 350 pages, digitalized 7.5 hours of sound recordings and described 2,916 words from the Kamchadal dialect, according to the region’s official website.

A digital dictionary of Russian-language dialects, spoken in Kamchatka, will include a unique vocabulary reflecting the specifics of local life and culture. Moreover, the vocabulary will list phraseology and various toponyms, or local names of villages, rivers and mountains.

In 2026, researchers are planning to describe an additional 1,500 words and to continue digitalizing archive recordings.
