Nenets Autonomous Area introduces position of Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Indigenous Small-numbered Peoples of the North

The initiative, proposed by Nenets Autonomous Area Governor Irina Gekht, was supported by the Assembly of Deputies of the Nenets Autonomous Area. According to the regional assembly’s press service, the Commissioner will begin work on January 1, 2026.

“The individual appointed to this post will be responsible for safeguarding the rights and legitimate interests of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, liaising with government authorities, and having a deep understanding of their traditions and way of life,” Irina Gekht wrote on her Telegram channel.

The new position is being introduced to provide additional guarantees for the state protection of the rights and lawful interests of the indigenous peoples living in the region.
