Yamal approves genetic testing program for the region's residents

The region government press service reports that under a three-year program 9,000 moms-to-be referred to risk groups  and pregnant women referred to risk groups, living in settlements or leading a nomadic lifestyle will be offered a non-invasive screening for genetic abnormalities in the fetus.

The survey will help specialists to determine at an early stage whether the future child has serious diseases such as Down or Klinefelter syndrome.

In Yamal, such testing began in 2020, and the 13,500 plus tests carried out to date helped reduce the amount of the invasive diagnostics by more than 40 percent.

This year Yamal residents have the opportunity to consult genetic doctors without leaving the region. The consultations are held both in person and online.
