The designing bureau of the Remvooruzheniye holding has developed a line of dumb barges for shallow water areas. The vessels will replace a fleet of outdated cargo ships and help to increase the share of freight haulage by internal water transport, Rostec Press Service reports. Two types of vessels are offered at stage one. First, a container barge designed to transport as many as 20 cylindrical or 10 standard 20-foot containers to be arranged on the deck or inside the hull. Second, an oil fuel lighter capable of carrying oil products or chemicals even under tough logistical scenarios, such as supply runs in the Arctic. It is noted that both types can unload in an autonomous regime where there is no port equipment. The vessels’ design enables their consistent en-route uncoupling and unloading without halting an entire convoy. The barges can also be used for bottom dredging, river estuary clearing, or polluted wastewater disposal. Prospectively, the project can be adapted to navigate the Northern Sea Route by way of installing a cargo heating system, reinforcing ice guard, and expanding automation, the Press Service added.
