Pushkov: Arctic becoming a new West-East rift
The Greenland crisis shows that the Arctic is emerging as a new rift in West-East relations, Federation Council member Alexei Pushkov wrote in his Telegram account.
“Greenland has made it clear that the Arctic is coming into the picture as a region of geopolitical rivalry and a new fault line between the geopolitical West and the geopolitical East,” he believes.
The Senator notes that US President Donald Trump’s policy to annex Greenland is not an odd whim of his but an attempt to bolster up the US positions along the new frontline.
“It is to this end that he needs Greenland, which he has described as a “very big and poorly located chunk of ice.” Trump is being economical with the truth, of course, because it is Greenland’s location that interests the US first and foremost. The island provides an outlet to the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route that is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s main transport arteries, primarily for Russia and China,” he stated.
