New Russian gas carrier Alexei Kosygin completes its maiden Arctic voyage
The vessel sailed from Bolshoy Kamen, Primorye Territory, to Murmansk, making calls at the Gulf of Ob and Ura bays, according to Sovcomflot’s press service.
“During the voyage, the vessel carried out a high-latitude transit along the Northern Sea Route, including its eastern sector, under winter navigation conditions. This region is characterized by the most difficult navigational and ice conditions,” the company noted.
The gas carrier possesses a high ice classification of Arc7, enabling it to operate in frigid waters at extremely low temperatures. Its crew comprises 31 seafarers.
The vessel was commissioned on December 22, 2025. On January 28, it was loaded with natural gas from the in the Gulf of Ob. On February 3, the gas carrier discharged its cargo to a floating storage facility in Ura-Guba (Ura Bay), Barents Sea. Following in racks of an Atomflot icebreaker from Cape Dezhnev to the Gulf of Ob the gas carrier covered 2,488.9 nautical miles in 12 days and maintained an average speed of 8.7 knots in ice conditions.
