Share of foreign trade transportation by sea in the Arctic is nearing 100 percent

The number of ships involved in cargo transportation in the Russian Arctic is to reach 122 by 2030, said Director of the Department of State Policy in Maritime and Inland Water Transport of the Russian Ministry of Transport Vitaly Klyuev at the XI International Arctic Legal Forum "Preservation and sustainable development of the Arctic: legal aspects."

At present, about 40 ships of high Arctic class Arc7 are engaged in maritime transportation. The design capacity of the river ports in the Arctic area and Siberian Federal District, as well as the ports having access to the Northern Sea Route was 31,1 million tons as of January 1, 2025. The freight traffic is supposed to considerably grow by 2030 and the number of ships will increase along with it.

The Ministry of Transport reaffirmed that the drafted Northern Sea Route development strategy until 2050 will include long-term principles and approaches to creating a competitive transport corridor.
