Murmansk engineers develop automatic freight load measuring system for Arctic seaports
Employees at the Murmansk merchant seaport are already using a simplified version of a system that calculates a vessel’s freight load by measuring its draft. This process is faster than older technologies, according to the press service of Murmansk Arctic University.
Earlier, Arctic ports utilized a method that required specialists to board vessels but caused prolonged delays. The new automated process considerably reduces measuring time.
According to Murmansk Arctic University, the system features Russian-made equipment and is currently installed on a transport barge; it relays all data to computers and mobile devices in the real-time mode.
“Work is now underway to launch the system’s complete version and to check its effectiveness in low temperatures,” university sources added.
The research project aims to implement part of Murmansk Arctic University’s strategic goals, specifically, developing significant innovations for the Northern Sea Route’s projects; this will make it possible to involve the university in the Priority 2030 program.
