Iceland loses its status as the only country lacking mosquitos
The first species were found in western Iceland in early October 2025. Caught by an amateur entomologist, they were sent to the Natural Science Institute of Iceland (NSII), where it was confirmed that the insects were mosquitos.
According to a NSII specialist, the insects in question are Culiseta annulata, a species resistant to cold and capable of surviving in the Icelandic climate
It will be recalled that Iceland, one of the eight Arctic states, was long held to be the only country without mosquitos.
