Deputy Prime Minister holds working meeting with Yamal Governor
Dmitry Chernyshenko and Dmitry Artyukhov discussed the development of science and education, the youth policy, sports, as well as regional projects in the field of tourism, according to the Government’s press service.
“The Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area focuses on the development of the science and education sphere and is actively involved in the Youth and Children national project. A cluster trains specialists for the tourism and services industry under the Professional Training federal project, the infrastructure continues to improve, and the Rural Teacher program is implemented. Work is also underway to establish the Snezhinka (Snowflake) international Arctic research station in the polar Ural region,” Dmitry Chernyshenko noted.
The area has been implementing the Yamal – Territory of Childhood program for over 12 months. This year, the program’s plan includes 57 various events. The region expands a network of education parks for science and technical creativity. In the 2026, the Yamal State College will set up the Professional Training cluster. In early August, a soil-research laboratory, part of the Center for Arctic Studies, started working in Salekhard.
“In the past few years, we have accomplished a lot in expanding the social infrastructure; we have built 17 schools and 30 kindergartens, 68 sports facilities. Our key objective is to raise local living standards and to create favorable conditions allowing the people of Yamal to achieve their goals, to unlock the potential of every child, despite the harsh Extreme North environment,” Yamal Governor Dmitry Artyukhov noted.
The I am Young school opened in September, with over 5,000 young Northern residents enrolling in it. The area has 12 Northern Character martial arts centers, and three more are to open by 2027. Work is underway to build major sports facilities, and the Rural Coach program is implemented. The region has also signed cooperation agreements with two leading Russian universities for training professional athletes.
In 2025, the Arctic Extreme Games received the status of nationwide competitions. Yamal is to host nationwide mountain climbing, extreme power sports, unarmed combat and weightlifting competitions for the first time.
According to regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov, the Salekhard – Labytnangi agglomeration should turn into a major tourism cluster by 2035. For this purpose, a bridge will be built across the Ob River, the Ingilor Nature Park will also be upgraded, the area capital’s airport will be reconstructed, and the Rai-Iz alpine skiing resort established.
