Four new EMERCOM centers to be established in Arctic
The idea to establish EMERCOM units in the eastern Arctic has been supported by Yury Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District. This was announced by Timofei Sulima, Deputy Director of the Department of Educational, Scientific, and Technical Activities and Head of the Arctic Region Security Development Department of the Russian Ministry of Emergencies (EMERCOM), during the One Step Ahead: Comprehensive Security session at the 15th Arctic: Present and Future international forum.
The first of the four planned centers opened in Pevek in 2024.
A new center is scheduled to open in March 2026 in the township of Sabeta in Yamal. Another center will open in 2028 in Tiksi.
Construction of a center in Dikson is planned in 2028-2031.
“Until 2024, our forces and assets were not based in the eastern Arctic, virtually not at all. We covered the western part, with six units working there,” Timofei Sulima said.
