The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) has established a new Institute of Arctic Technologies, which will focus primarily on research and development, testing innovative products and advanced technologies, and implementing projects to support the development of the Russian Arctic Zone, RIA Novosti reports.“The institute’s main objectives are to conduct research and development, test innovative high-tech products and advanced technologies, implement industrial projects to support the development of the Russian Arctic Zone, and subsequently transfer the resulting solutions to other regions. This involves creating a complete production cycle, from development andmanufacturing products to testing them in Arctic conditions and commissioning,” the MIPT press service said in a statement. The Institute of Arctic Technologies will work on projects involvingenergy and mineral resources, space communications, and the development of unmanned systems for ice reconnaissance, cargo monitoring, and expanding economic activity along the Northern Sea Route. Additionally, the Institute will conduct geophysical, seismic, meteorological, and environmental research, as well as test medical equipment and technologies for emergency and extreme-condition medicine. The new institute brings together the Science and Technical Center of Energy Resources and New Energy Technologies, the Science and Technical Center of Self-Contained Energy Systems, the Science and Technical Center ofGeophysics and Mineral Resources, the Center for Developing and Testing Technical Systems of the Snezhinka International Arctic Station, the Science and Technical Center for Monitoring the Environment and the MIPT – Lomonosov Moscow State University Geo-EcologyLaboratory, the Center of Extreme and Emergency Medicine and the MIPT – Sechenov University Laboratory of Arctic Medicine.According to the Institute’s press service, more than 1 billion rubles in funding is earmarked for the work of these divisions in 2026.The Institute’s industrial program will comprise three projects. The first involves buildingthe Snezhinka (Snowflake) International Arctic Station on the Yamal Peninsula as a testing ground for high-tech products and technologies. The second project aims to expand MIPT's existing hydrogen technology testing site and establish a similar facility on Sakhalin in cooperation with Sakhalin University. These facilitieswill be used to test heavy-duty transportation systems, including mining dump trucks, railway locomotives, and sea and river ferries. The third project involves establishing a network of testing facilities at the sites of industrial partners to develop and refine technologies for mineral exploration and extraction, as well as to model and refine estimates of proven mineral reserves in accordance with Russian and international standards, using supercomputers and artificial intelligence .“The establishment of the Instituteformalizes the transition from individual Arctic projects to a comprehensive, systemic program. MIPT is bringing together research, engineering, and educational infrastructure around the Snezhinka International Arctic Station to advance technologies through testing and industrial use. This is a major contribution to Russia’s technological sovereignty and leadership in the Arctic,” MIPT Rector Dmitry Livanov said.
