President Vladimir Putin has signed an executive order appointing Mayor of Vladivostok Konstantin Shestakov as Acting Governor of the Primorye Territory, according to a statement released on the Kremlin’s website.
“I hereby resolve to appoint Konstantin Shestakov as Acting Governor of the Primorye Territory until the elected Governor of Primorye Territory takes office. This executive order shall enter into force on the day of its signing,” the document reads.
Before signing the executive order, the President had a meeting with Mr. Shestakov to discuss the region’s development plans. The President said that the Primorye Territory had to work hard and make an all-out effort to improve and develop its territories.
“We want those who live there, as well as those who might choose to move there, to feel that this is a place where they truly want to live – not as though they were embarking on some heroic, monumental undertaking like moving to the Moon,” Vladimir Putin pointed out.
In his remarks, Konstantin Shestakov said that Vladivostok and Primorye serve as the eastern gateway to the Northern Sea Route, and that the main tracks for developing the Primorye Territory have been outlined. They include building a stronger economy and promoting investment, developing shipbuilding, as well as attracting people to work in the region.
He went on to say that Primorye has been able to generate positive momentum in investment with an increase of 27 percent or by 487 billion rubles over the past year, which is expected to enable the region to create more jobs and undertake new projects.
“We face a very serious and interesting task – to make people fall in love with the Primorye Territory and show them that here, in this city by the sea and across the Primorye Territory, they can fulfill their potential in science, entrepreneurship, the creative arts, sport and, of course, at our industrial enterprises,” Konstantin Shestakov noted.
Vladimir Putin supported the region’s new head and welcomed his attitude by emphasizing the importance of taking care of Russia’s Far East and paying more attention to this region. “It is the land itself and, above all, the people who live and work there, those who came to the Far East long ago and managed to persuade their children to stay and build their lives there. This is our greatest asset, and we must cherish and develop it,” the President said.
