More than 620 job vacancies are open across Yakutia’s Arctic districts, and the call for qualified specialists to staff major infrastructure projects is expected to run into the thousands before long. Anatoly Nikolayev, Rector of the Maxim Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU), gave the figure to RIA Novosti.
The demand, he says, is being driven by the fast-developing Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor –an integrated transport and logistics system linking the Baltic region to the Far East by way of the Northern Sea Route.
“We are already short of hundreds of specialists, and soon it will be thousands. We can’t keep planning around individual enterprises. We need to think about the staffing needs of every sector at once, if the Arctic is to see real, dynamic growth,” Nikolayev said.
Figures from Yakutia’s State Committee for Employment show the sharpest need in healthcare, transport and industry. And the demand reaches well beyond port infrastructure: development on this scale inevitably pulls social services along with it –medicine, education, construction, public utilities. Engineers, logistics specialists, hydrologists and design engineers are all in particular demand.
Meeting that challenge, Anatoly Nikolayev believes, means doing two things at once: creating a living and working environment on a par with the big cities, and making sure the universities turn out people with the right knowledge and skills.
“We offer professional retraining shaped by what employers actually need, and we want that to become a standing system rather than a one-off. In the Arctic, keeping specialists’ skills up to date matters every bit as much as training new ones,” he concluded.
