Coal-fired power generation accountsfor over 65 percent of the Far East’s energy mix, Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic Alexei Chekunkov said at a meeting of the Russian State Council Commission on Energy.
“The Far East has enormous coal reserves of all grades, with proven reserves totaling nearly 26 billion metric tons. Our goal is not simply to burn coal, but to make smart use of its potential by applying modern technologies. These include digitalizing processes, improving the efficiency of coal-fired power plants, introducing emissions control systems, expanding coal processing, and developing carbon capture, storage, and utilization technologies,” Chekunkov emphasized.
According to the minister, energy consumption in the Far East has increased by 21 percent overthe past five years, twice the national average growth rate. It is projected to increase by another third by 2030.
Following the meeting, participants proposed developing a comprehensive program to modernize and expand coal-fired power generation in Russia. For selected pilot projects, they will consider introducing an experimental legal regime for up to five years, allowing regulatory barriers to be lifted while the technology is being tested.
