According to the information posted on the Maritime Board’s website following a working visit to China by Aide to the President of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev, growing trade between Russia and China calls for reliable transportation corridors, many of which run along maritime routes.
He noted that energy cooperation also depended on reliable supply chains, while developing natural resources, including in the Arctic, required joint efforts to ensure safe navigation.
“China has been pursuing its Maritime Silk Road Initiative for more than 10 years now. Drawing on its extensive experience in polar navigation and operating the Northern Sea Route, Russia has launched the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor Project. By developing these initiatives, our countries can reshape the global geoeconomic landscape, making maritime trade cheaper, more accessible, and more resilient to risks of military escalation, piracy, and sanctions, among others” Nikolai Patrushev said at a meeting with Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Patrushev also met with Chinese Transport Minister Liu Wei. The parties focused on Chinese companies’ participation in developing the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor and implementing the Mohe-Naiba International Transport Corridor Project, as well as cooperation on Arctic development.
The participants also discussed prospects for jointly developing new strategic maritime and inland waterway routes, particularly in the polar regions, and ensuring uninterrupted maritime supplies of energy and other critical raw materials.
