The Sakhalin Regional Oncology Center has become the first medical institution in the Far East and the ninth in the country to treat liver cancer using radioembolization, the regional government’s press service reported.

“We are creating conditions to ensure that residents of the region can receive medical care without having to travel outside the region,” said Governor Valery Limarenko.

The first procedure took place in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. A master class for local doctors was conducted by specialists from the Anatoly Tsyb Federal Center, a branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Center. Further on, Sakhalin oncologists will perform these procedures independently.
Radioembolization is a treatment for liver cancer that destroys tumors from within using radiation, while causing minimal damage to healthy tissues. Patients remain in the hospital for up to five days.
