The ALLOY: Research+Art experimental laboratory has become operational in Norilsk. It was established at Fedorovsky Polar State University (PSU) and the Norilsk Museum. As the PSU press service explained, science-art is a technology-driven field of contemporary art at the intersection of science and creativity. The laboratory’s participants – students and media artists – will create installations across seven scientific areas: construction on permafrost, the development of subsoil resources in the Far North, new additive technologies for the Far North, nonferrous metallurgy, and others. Through this initiative, the university’s cutting-edge research will be transformed into works of art.“ALLOY is a blend of contemporary art and science aimed at increasing student engagement in the development of the country’s northern territories,” the rector emphasized. The initiative to establish the laboratory originated with the Norilsk Museum which has permanent exhibits featuring the history of the exploration of the North, as well as Taimyr’s ethnography and nature. Its collections include 85,000 items.“We seek to cultivate an interest in the world, science, and culture among young audiences. The themes of the art installations will focus on PSU’s most promising scientific research areas: from geological and environmental narratives to metallurgy and new technologies,” noted Natalya Fedyanina, director of the Norilsk Museum and Exhibition Complex. The art installations created in the laboratory will be presented on November 20 at the Norilsk Museum, coinciding with the 65thanniversary of Fedorovsky Polar State University.
