In 2027, the Artur Chilingarov Ice Base will be established at the North Pole. Its key objectives will be to safeguard the national interests of the Russian Federation in the Arctic and to create a seasonal autonomous scientific research and logistics facility for conducting research, testing equipment and technologies, and carrying out awareness, sports, and expedition programs.
Head of the Polar Expeditions Department at the Krasnoyarsk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society Sergei Orlov told Arctic.ru that the project will provide for the delivery and operation of research teams in the area of the geographic North Pole, as well as accommodation, communications, medical support, power supply, and safe operations in drifting-ice conditions.
“In a broader sense, the ice base should become a place where science, technology, international cooperation, sports, and people’s personal interest in exploring the Arctic come together,” Sergei Orlov said.
The base can accommodate up to 60 people at a one time and will be equipped with autonomous power supply and heating systems, satellite and radio communications, a medical module, living and common areas, safety equipment, and essential supplies. Infrastructure will also be available to accommodate research and expedition teams.

Preparations are underway for the 2027 expedition, which will take place in April. Scientific, sports, and expedition programs are being drafted and finalized, and aviation logistics, the base’s technical equipment, communications and medical support systems, and safety arrangements are being worked out. Contractual, financial, and organizational preparations are underway as well.
“Preparations are underway in Krasnoyarsk for the Arctic multifunctional modules that have been upgraded for use in the harsh conditions of the high-latitude Arctic, and for heating and power supply systems and other equipment. These modules will form the foundation of the future Artur Chilingarov Polar Scientific Research Ice Base. The base will consist of 28 modules, each designed to support different scientific and expedition tasks, while also providing comfortable conditions for researchers,” Sergei Orlov added.
The ice base project is being carried out by the Russian Ministry for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic in conjunction with the Russian Geographical Society, federal executive authorities, and the governments of the Arctic regions.
