Fall ice formation along the Northern Sea Route is expected to begin around the long-term average time, and the freeze-up process will be rapid. Vessel escort schedules may be adjusted during this period, the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) reports.
During the first 20 days of October, significant areas of the Laptev and East Siberian seas will become covered with young ice, and by the end of the month, these seas will be completely ice-covered.
According to the institute, a key feature of the 2026 navigation season was the rapid clearing of ice from the seas in the western Arctic sector – the Barents, Kara and Laptev seas – while challenging ice conditions persisted in the eastern seas until the end of August.
“In the high-latitude Arctic, ice formation began to be observed amid the remaining old ice as early as mid-August, approximately 10 days ahead of the long-term average. By mid-September, ice formation had reached the northern boundaries of the Russian seas. The earlier onset of autumn-winter ice processes in the central Arctic Ocean suggests that the seas along the Northern Sea Route may freeze over earlier than usual,” AARI reported.
Scientists forecast that in the Chukchi Sea, the Long Strait will freeze over during the second ten-day period of October, while the eastern part of the sea and the approaches to the Bering Strait will continue to freeze through the third ten-day period of November. Only in the Kara Sea will ice formation follow a moderately late pattern, occurring 10 days later than the long-term average. The Vilkitsky Strait will be covered with young ice by October 15, while ice formation in the Kara Strait will be completed during the final ten days of December.
Based on this data, ship owners, nuclear icebreaker operators and logistics companies will be able to adjust vessel escort schedules for the period of intensive autumn ice formation, when young ice can significantly affect the speed and safety of navigation along the Northern Sea Route.
