Russia’s efforts to develop the Far East, the Arctic, and Eastern Siberia are deliberate and have been underway for many years, President Vladimir Putin pointed out at the plenary session of the 23rd annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.
According to the head of state, the Far East has a whole system of preferences in place, and from January 1 next year, all previously created support tools will be consolidated into one.
“This is an unprecedented decision for us,” Putin emphasized.
The President also noted that preferential mortgages have helped stem the outflow of population from the Far Eastern territories.
“What are mortgage rates right now? Sixteen to seventeen percent nationwide – but in the Far East, just two percent. We had depopulation, people were leaving. We stopped that process in the Far East. The birth rate in Vladivostok is higher than the national average. Income levels are higher than the national average,” Vladimir Putin said.
He added that the development of the Far Eastern economy is intended primarily to address high-tech challenges and advance the intellectual dimension.
In particular, this means support for aviation companies, the construction of gas carriers and large civil vessels for work in the Arctic, the operation of the cosmodrome and the largest oil and gas chemical facilities in the Far East. The region has also built a new federal multidisciplinary university, is developing a branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences focused on marine biology, and is creating one of the largest cultural centers in Russia.
“This will be a very attractive draw – not only for our residents in the Far East and Eastern Siberia, but for all our neighbors in the region. And here, too, the way opens for cooperation,” the President said.
Vladimir Putin recalled that the first Chinese container ship recently arrived at the port of Murmansk along the Northern Sea Route.
“I am confident that we will establish effective cooperation and make full use of the Northern Sea Route in the interests of Russia and the People’s Republic of China,” said the head of state.
