Five smokejumpers have completed a 70-hour course at the Arctic Training Center featuring practical training in operating unmanned aerial vehicles with a maximum takeoff weight of up to 30 kg. This is the center’s inaugural class in the new area, Arkhangelsk Region Governor Alexander Tsybulsky wrote in social media.Last year, 38 drones were purchased for the Unified Forest Fire Center, which is now fully equipped with UAVs.“A drone is a smokejumper’s second pair of eyes. It shows the area from above, helping to determine the direction of fire spread, find hotspots, and choose a drop zone. This is extremely important in a remote area,” the governor stated.Deputy Director for Flight Operations and Ground Forest Protection Nikolai Zelenin noted that the course was prepared on instructions from the regional government to train professionals in the use of drones for detecting and fighting fires.“The course includes theoretical training, indoor flights, and the use of computers and simulators. After completing it, students train outdoors in the center’s territory, learning to pilot consumer drones,” Nikolai Zelenin told Arctic.ru.Firefighters learn drone operation skills from scratch, focusing on practical training.“The faculty received education in drone operation, completed advanced training courses, and are now sharing their knowledge with our trainees under a special program we developed,” he said.Nikolai Zelenin added that upon completing the course the trainees take a final exam for a drone operator certificate.
