The first state-run rehabilitation center for Amur tigers and other wild animals in Russia has already welcomed its first resident. The center was opened in the protected area of the Ussuriysky Nature Reserve ahead of Tiger Day, the press service of the Primorye Territory Government reports.The center occupies more than 65 hectares of pristine forest. Four enclosures have been built for adult Amur tigers and three for orphaned tiger cubs. There are also separate enclosures for birds and small mammals, as well as for Himalayan bears.“The Primorye Territory is home to the largest population of Amur tigers, numbering more than 550 animals, and it is only natural that the first center of this kind – and I would emphasize that it is a state-run facility – should open here,” Justice Minister Konstantin Chuychenko said. He added that the center was established on the President’s instruction.The center has been designed so that the tigers will live in their natural environment of the Ussuri taiga and will be released into the wild once they have grown strong enough, Primorye Territory Governor Oleg Kozhemyako said.“The center will provide rehabilitation for predators in need of assistance, including tiger cubs that, for various reasons, lost their mothers in the taiga and would be unable to survive on their own in harsh conditions. They will receive the care they need without coming into contact with humans,” the Governor said.
