Canada’s growing military spending in the Arctic risks fueling an arms race and turning the region into an arena of rivalry, Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov told RIA Novosti.“That risk exists if these activities result in the creation of infrastructure that NATO could use to project military power in the Far North. It would be more prudent for Canada not to turn the Arctic into an arena of rivalry, but instead to channel its resources toward peaceful purposes, such as communications, search and rescue, transportation, and scientific research,” the diplomat said when asked about the possibility of an arms race.Canada has been expanding its military presence in the Arctic in recent years, investing in the modernization of defense infrastructure, surveillance and early warning systems, and upgrades to its fleet for operations in northern waters. Russia has consistently opposed the militarization of the Arctic and the expansion of NATO’s military activity in the region, emphasizing its interest in preserving the Arctic as a region of peace, stability, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
