A new stage in the introduction of automated and autonomoustechnologies for freight train operations has begun on the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM).
According to the press service ofthe Governor and Government of the Khabarovsk Territory, the primary objective of this project is to enable more trains to run without delaysand to increase freight volumes. A range of solutions is being used for this purpose, including virtual coupling of trains, automatic train operation, computer vision systems, advanced radio communications, and predictive diagnostics.
“We see the main benefit ofintroducing these solutions for the region in improving people’s skills and creating new professional opportunities,” said Irina Gorbacheva, Deputy Prime Minister for Infrastructure at the Government of the Khabarovsk Territory.
Ultimately, the Self-Driving BAM project is expected to integrate computer vision, virtual coupling, automatic train operation, and satellite communications technologies into a single system. Train operations will be remotely controlled by specialists.
After the technologies are tested on sections of the BAM in the Amur Region, the project is planned to be gradually expanded into the Khabarovsk Territory,all the way to Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
