Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Premier of the Cabinet of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Pak Thae-song took part via videoconference in the opening ceremony for a new automobile bridge over the Tumannaya River, according to the Russian government’s press service.The bridge crossing is nearly five kilometers long, with the bridge itself spanning about one kilometer. It has two lanes for vehicle traffic. The project was completed in just 16 months, with a border checkpoint also built in record time.The Russian prime minister noted that the bridge was designed to handle a projected surge in freight and passenger traffic, with a capacity for up to 300 vehicles per day.“We are expanding logistics infrastructure in the Far East and creating new opportunities to strengthen interregional ties and industrial cooperation. This will create new jobs and open up promising avenues for the tourism industry,” Mikhail Mishustin said.The bridge was named after Yakov Novichenko, a Red Army junior lieutenant and veteran of the 1945 Soviet-Japanese War. In 1946, he saved DPRK leader Kim Il-sung from an assassination attempt during a rally in Pyongyang. For his actions he was awarded the DPRK’s highest state honor, the title of Hero of Labor.
