Cooperation among all federal executive bodies will help address the challenge of ensuring comprehensive shipping safety along the Northern Sea Route and the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor (TTC), experts said at the 2026 Eastern Economic Forum.The Ministry of Transport is currently considering expanding its emergency rescue fleet in the Arctic in response to growing shipping traffic along the Northern Sea Route and plans for the development of the Arctic, Deputy Transport Minister Alexander Poshivai said.“Together with Rosatom and the Emergencies Ministry, we are working to ensure shipping safety in the Arctic, each within our respective areas of responsibility. We are considering the possibility of expanding our emergency rescue fleet beyond its current capacity,” he said.According to Vladimir Novikov, a member of the State Duma Committee on the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, providing support for emergency rescue and firefighting units remains a pressing issue for the development of the Northern Sea Route and the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor.“Both the Northern Sea Route and the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor need to be developed, which means increasing the number of relevant units. We cannot ignore the issue of staffing these structures, which perform an extremely important and responsible mission under the harsh natural and climatic conditions of the North. We have asked the government to develop additional incentive measures,” Novikov emphasized.In turn, Kamchatka Territory Governor Vladimir Solodov spoke about plans to create a high-latitude multimodal port near the village of Tilichiki in the northern part of the region.“I would like to specifically highlight a project that is not yet widely known but has great strategic potential: a high-latitude multimodal port that could be developed at the northernmost seaport of Korf in Tilichiki. It is located close to the border with the Chukotka Autonomous Area and could also provide year-round navigation and enhance maritime security,” the Kamchatka governor said.
