Unlocking the potential of the Transarctic Transport Corridor, which requires among other conditions involvement of scientists, is becoming the key area of international interaction in the Arctic, as experts reported at the Eastern Economic Forum 2026.Special Representative of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation for the Development of the Arctic Vladimir Panov spoke on what new opportunities are provided for the country by the development of the Transarctic Transport Corridor.“First comes changing of the logistic routes. Chinese companies are already consistently using the Northern Sea Route. Second is the acceleration of the Arctic’s development. Russian Arctic zone has a unique nuclear icebreakers fleet, a freight fleet, new ports, transshipment terminals, and digital services shaping a long-term reserve for the Russian leadership in the Arctic. Third is the implementation of technological projects,” he stressed.Participants in the discussion also touched on the work of the Arctic Council. Director of the Foreign Ministry Department of European Issues Vladislav Maslennikov believes that top-notch specialists are losing interest in participating in the Arctic Council’s working bodies, and observer countries are beginning to seek other formats for cooperation.“The Council is stagnating. It looks like a car that has remained in the garage for years without movement: its mechanisms became jammed and rust, and some things became obsolete,” Maslennikov says.In addition, he quoted an article by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the effect that the Russian side is prepared to work with the countries showing a constructive attitude to resolving various issues in the Arctic. Most efficient dialogue is maintained by China and India; cooperation is also expanding with South Korea and Singapore, as well as member countries of the BRICS and CIS.In his turn Vladimir Panov pointed out that a new international organization based on a pragmatic format of cooperation in the Arctic may appear soon.“The new international cooperation format based on pragmatism and the economy, creates prerequisites for the emergence of a new international organization. I can assume that we will see such a format in the coming year or two," Panov said.
