Many participants in The Arctic: The Ice Has Broken! nationwide youth forum have visited the North for the first time and learned about the opportunities the Arctic has to offer. Their interest in the region is a source of great optimism, Denis Gusev, senator representing the Nenets Autonomous Area, told Arctic.ru.“The young people’s interest in jobs in the oil and gas industry, culture and sports, as well as the questions they asked today, give us good reason to be optimistic that some of those who visited our venue today will come to the North and take part in major investment and humanitarian projects,” he said.According to Denis Gusev, young people can quickly establish themselves in their chosen professions in the Arctic, thanks in part to the lack of intense competition and the emergence of new fields in which young professionals can prove themselves, provided they are willing to put in the necessary effort.“Many fields, such as transport infrastructure and subsoil use, offer a direct path to professional fulfillment. The most important thing is to demonstrate your competence, work hard and make the effort needed to establish yourself in your profession,” he said.Denis Gusev noted that the Government has designated 16 key towns in the Arctic Zone where social infrastructure, healthcare and education are planned to be developed.According to Gusev, the Nenets Autonomous Area is developing hands-on, practice-oriented education starting at the secondary school level to help train specialists and give them a successful start to their careers. Students at vocational and technical schools are also offered opportunities for ongoing practical training, with the aim of subsequently securing jobs for them.“This is being done so that young people do not feel disconnected when they begin their careers and know where they will work afterwards. We have companies in the oil and gas industry, the public sector, and the transport industry, where students can start working while they are still studying, including at the companies where they completed their practical training,” the senator said.According to Gusev, the Federation Council is currently working on a number of legislative initiatives related to the Arctic zone and determining strategic priorities in cooperation with the relevant ministry.Many of these efforts focus on supporting children and young people. The senator noted that the Children of the Arctic program, launched at the initiative of Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, is already being implemented, including through free vouchers to health and recreation camps.“Of course, we are paying close attention to the development of our regions, particularly the northern ones,” he concluded.
