The anniversary edition of The Arctic: The Ice Has Broken youth environmental forum and festival is taking place in the capital of the Nenets Autonomous Area for the first time, bringing together participants from across 62 regions of Russia.Young activists taking part in the event received a message of greetings from President Vladimir Putin who noted their contribution to eliminating the environmental damage which has been accumulating in the Arctic. Chief of the Presidential Directorate for Social Projects Sergei Novikov read the message from the stage at Arktika cultural center.In his greetings, Vladimir Putin went on to emphasize that the forum’s participants have been offering tangible support to the state, local officials, businesses and research organizations in promoting sustainable economic development of the Arctic territories while exercising due caution.The President also praised the Clean Arctic project for its outcomes. It helped collect over 22,000 tons of waste in the most remote regions of the Nenets Autonomous Area, the Kola Peninsula, Chukotka, Yamal, Pomorye, the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Karelia.“I am confident that this forum-festival will broaden the horizons of your activities, help attract new supporters, and produce some future-oriented ideas that will be relevant and beneficial for our country,” the President wrote in his message.Governor of the Nenets Autonomous Area Irina Gekht welcomed the participants on the hospitable Nenets land and said that it was a great honor for the region to host the forum for the first time.“Today, the Arctic offers a window of opportunity with its grand-scale infrastructure projects, along with its unique environment and culture. I think that you will have a chance to experience our rich and impactful culture and discover the regional economy during these five days. You will find new friends and fulfill your ideas. As for us, we will be delighted to have you in our region as specialists,” Irina Gekht told the participants.
