President of Russia Vladimir Putin visited the Kuril island of Iturup for the first time as part of his working trip to the Sakhalin Region. Accompanied by Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko, the President saw key social and industrial sites there and met with senior regional government officials to discuss demographics and family support measures, according to a statement released on the Kremlin’s official website.During the meeting with the President, the Governor reported on positive demographic trends by saying in the Sakhalin Region had a fertility rate of 1.7, prompting Vladimir Putin to note that this indicator “is above the national average.”The Governor went on to present new family support measures in the Sakhalin Region, including the Happy Motherhood program for families with small children. It provides for compensating expenses for in-home private childcare services.Vladimir Putin praised these initiatives and said that they were “great innovations.”“Sakhalin now offers a comfortable living environment. In terms of living standards, we have been ranked as the fifth best region, trailing Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tyumen and Tatarstan,” the Governor said, adding that 49 healthcare institutions were built or benefited from upgrades on Sakhalin over the past five years.Vladimir Putin’s working trip also included a visit to the Yasny fish processing plant, where the President saw the production facilities and talked with staff members.After that, the President visited the Kuril Central District Hospital and a newly built Hero of Russia Eduard Norpolov Secondary School. Located in Kurilsk, this new school is one of the key social facilities built as part of the federal program to develop the Kuril Islands.

“We are a top ten region. I can say that it is already quite a challenge to stay at this level, but our objective is to go even higher than that,” Valery Limarenko pointed out.
