Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to take part in the final stage of large-scale Pacific Fleet exercises, according to the Kremlin’s official website.The head of state boarded the Varyag Guards Missile Cruiser, where he observed the sailors’ actions and made a number of statements.Speaking about the situation in the region, the President noted that tensions are escalating not only in the Asia-Pacific region but also in the Arctic, particularly around the use of the Northern Sea Route. He also emphasized that Russia has always advocated for cooperation in the Arctic within the framework of international maritime law and reaffirmed its readiness to make use of the Northern Sea Route’s advantages.“Russia has always upheld its unwavering commitment and reaffirms its readiness to work with others in the Arctic to benefit from the advantages the Northern Sea Route has to offer. Of course, this must be done in keeping with the international law of the sea. Countries that want and are interested in working with us primarily include our friends: China, India, and other countries,” the President said.Vladimir Putin also praised the actions of the Pacific Fleet’s marines, noting their ability to accomplish any combat mission.“Its personnel are bold, professional and heroic in their actions. As for the fleet, it has also been effective in performing its mission within its area of responsibility. These objectives are becoming increasingly important, which is attributable, among other things, to the current situation in the region,” the President noted.The Pacific Fleet exercises have been underway since August 4. Approximately 60 surface ships, submarines and support vessels, around 30 aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles of the Pacific Fleet’s naval aviation, as well as over 13,000 military personnel, are deployed in the waters of the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the north-west Pacific Ocean.
