The Kamchatka Territory and the Heilongjiang Province, China, have agreed to launch a new direct flight between Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Harbin. The agreement was reached on the sidelines of the sixth meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Chinese Commission on Cooperation and Development of Russia’s Far East and Northeast China, Kamchatka Territory Government reports on itswebsite.A key condition of the agreement is joint subsidization of the route: the Kamchatka Territory will provide funding on the Russian side, while the Heilongjiang province government will provide funding on the Chinese side. As a result, a one-way ticket will cost no more than 30,000 rubles. The flight will take about three hours, compared with current travel options involving connections in Vladivostok or Khabarovsk.“Direct air service to Harbin should, above all, make travel to China more convenient and affordable for residents of Kamchatka. Currently, the journey requires connections and takes considerably longer time. The new route will make it possible to reach Harbin directly in about three hours,” Kamchatka Territory Prime Minister Yulia Morozova said.Officials expect the launch of direct air service to expand opportunities for tourism and business travel between the two countries, while also promoting economic ties and cargo transportation between the peninsula and China’s northeastern regions.
