Pacific Fleet forces have begun deploying to the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the northwestern Pacific Ocean to conduct an exercise aimed at strengthening the defense of Russia’s Far Eastern maritime approaches, according to the Russian Defense Ministry’s press service.The ministry announced that groups of mine sweeping ships, anti-submarine search-and-strike groups, missile boat strike groups, and a naval strike group led by the Guards Order of Nakhimov guided missile cruiser Varyag have set about carrying out their assigned missions.The exercise involves around 60 surface ships, submarines, and auxiliary vessels, as well as approximately 30 airplanes, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles from the Pacific Fleet’s Naval Aviation, with more than 13,000 military personnel engaged.The primary objective of the exercise is to assess the ability of unit and formation key personnel to command and control task forces within their designated areas of responsibility while responding to non-standard operational scenarios. The drill will also include addressing the issues of integrated employment of precision-guided weapons and other modern weapons systems and military equipment.
