Scientists discover valuable mineral in the Khibiny Mountains

Russian researchers have carried out a chemical analysis of a mineral closely related to ashcroftine that was discovered in the Khibiny Mountains. The previous analysis of the mineral was conducted nearly a century ago, but the new study has refined its chemical composition and crystal structure, RIA Novosti reported, citing Sergei Krivovichev, a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Director General of the Kola Science Center.
As the scientist explained, ashcroftine was first discovered in Greenland, and the last chemical analysis of the mineral was carried out in 1924. The Russian specimen, named Kola ashcroftine, was found at the Kirovsky mine in the Khibiny massif.
“We came across a mineral that is remarkably similar to ashcroftine and, for the first time in a hundred years, have essentially conducted a new chemical analysis,” Krivovichev said.
The study also refined the mineral’s crystal structure, revealing a unique combination of porous nanoscopic tubes and rare-earth elements. According to the scientist, it is not yet clear whether the newly discovered specimen is identical to Greenland ashcroftine, a variant of it, or an entirely new mineral species.
