The Krasnoyarsk Territory Ministry of Ecology entered into a contract on conceiving projects to eliminate accumulated damage sites in the North. Three projects will be prepared by the end of the year: two in Norilsk and one in Dudinka, according to the territorial government’s press office.Sites of accumulated environmental damage are the areas, where environmental damage resulting from economic and other activities has been identified and the obligations to remedy such damage have not been fulfilled. Such sites include, for instance, landfills of industrial and other waste or areas contaminated with oil products.The sites to be included in an action plan will be examined at the expense of the payments to the budget for an unfavorable impact on the environment, fines for environmental violations and proceeds from claims for damage compensation.According to Krasnoyarsk Territory First Deputy Minister of Ecology Yulia Gumenyuk, 10 accumulated damage sites have already been detected in Norilsk and five of them are registered by the government now.The drafting of elimination plans will help the region to take part in the General Cleaning project under the Environmental Wellbeing national project and attract funds from the federal budget for a comprehensive land reclamation.

“All such sites have a negative impact on the environment. Their elimination is a priority for us. Oil products, manganese, copper, arsenic, nickel, lead, zinc, mercury are contained at such sites in excessive concentrations,” she underscored.
