Governor of the Nenets Autonomous Area Irina Gekht highlighted the significant role of the Northern peoples in preserving spiritual and moral values. She made the remarks at an extended meeting of the Council for Cooperation with Civil Society Institutions (affiliated with the Federation Council Speaker), held during the 2nd Forum of the Women of the North.According to the Governor, residents of the Nenets Autonomous Area believe that the principles of solidarity, mutual assistance, and the preservation of traditional values are deeply rooted in history and continue to play an important role today. To back up her point, Irina Gekht cited statistics on the number of large families in the region.Addressing the meeting, Deputy Governor and Head of the Department of Education and Science of the Chukotka Autonomous Area, Aryuna Baikova, noted that women of the North play an important role in fostering inter-ethnic unity.“For centuries, women of the North have preserved the most profound spiritual values of indigenous peoples, as well as their languages, traditions and households,” she said.Aryuna Baikova added that regional authorities are actively working with children. In 2025, the Motherland Starts With Us initiative was launched at preschool institutions in the Chukotka Autonomous Area. The project has created an integrated educational environment that incorporates games, creativity, research, and modern technologies. She also noted that the program helps instill in children a sense of pride, respect for their heritage, and a thoughtful love for both their greater and smaller Motherland.

“The local population is just over 42,000, and there are almost 1,300 families with many children. In all, 900 families have three children, 267 families have four children, 133 families have between five and seven children, and seven families raise between eight and ten children. Typically, these are families of reindeer herders and breeders,” she stressed.
