The Arctic Team student expedition corps has landed on the Solovetsky Islands. The project unites 116 universities from 53 Russian regions and aims to involve young people in research and expedition activities. The project participants are already improving the territory of the Transfiguration of the Savior Solovetsky Monastery and assisting pilgrims, as per the press service of the Arkhangelsk Region Government.
“Young people visit the Solovetsky Islands as part of a large team rather than tourists which contributes to preserving cultural legacy. The Solovetsky Islands are a key element of our summer program. In 2026, a record-breaking number of sessions will be organized here,” Deputy Rector of the MIREA – Russian Technological University Igor Tarasov noted.
During the summer expedition, the students will combine practical activities with studying traditions of the Russian North; they will help preserve local landmarks and will gain an insight into the unique church architecture.
“They will visit the St. Therapontus Monastery, an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Solovetsky Special Prison Camp and other facilities,” the press service of the MIREA – Russian Technological University said in a statement.
Apart from the Solovetsky Islands, the Arctic Team works at other facilities. Last year, project participants took part in the Large Arctic Expedition aboard the research expedition vessel Mikhail Somov. They worked at the Zimnegorsk Lighthouse in the Arkhangelsk Region, on Cape Kanin Nos and Kolguyev Island in the Nenets Autonomous Area.
