St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences has created the first automated system in Russia – a neural net – capable of assessing the condition of reindeer by their appearance using video records. The system is to solve a set of problems faced in this Arctic livestock sector, the press service of the St. Petersburg Committee on Science and Higher Education reports.
The survey published in the Arctic and Subarctic Natural Resources magazine says that the system will help raise the accuracy of the calculations of the animals’ meaningful parameters and thereby to increase the efficiency of livestock breeding in the polar region.
According to Senior Researcher at the center’s Laboratory of Information Technology in System Analysis and Modeling Vladislav Sobolevsky this R&D product is based on the neural net that analyses animals’ behavior on videos using computer vision. This way scientists can analyze the condition of each reindeer.

“Our system can also remotely monitor the reindeer and avoid the stress factors that the animal may experience, for instance, by carrying sensors,” he added.

The training of the neural network required 60 photographs of reindeer from the Yamal experimental herd. The experiments have shown that the system can accurately identify all key biometrical parameters, which make it possible to assess an animal’s health condition.
“Monitoring cattle fatness by analyzing muscle mass allows you to accurately predict herd productivity, which is critical for managing the forage base when pasture resources are limited. And computer-based detection of abnormalities in skin texture allows for early diagnosis of diseases, thus reducing losses due to mortality,” noted Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Rational Use of Natural Resources at the North-Western Center for Interdisciplinary Food Security Research – St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Kasim Laishev.
