Entrepreneurs from Chukotka have patented the Ilya brand toy, manufactured using ancient leather and fur processing technologies, as per the press service of the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous Area. Ilya means Friend in the Inuit language.
The toy which resembles a baby whale is made from processed reindeer hide, dyed with alder-tree bark using a traditional method. It is stitched together with sinew threads, the eyes are made from ring seal hide, and it is stuffed with reindeer hair, rather than Fiberfill.
According to a CEO of a manufacturing company, the toy’s concept was suggested by archive research.

“One book featured an image of a little wood-carved whale. My business partner Oksana Prisyazhnaya and I decided to recreate it using leather and sinew threads,” Nellya Omrynto noted.
The creation of a template whose configuration changed several times was the most difficult part of the project.
