An international summer school on international relations in the Arctic will take place on June 16-29 during an expedition to the Spitsbergen Archipelago. According to Irina Strelnikova, Director of the International Scientific and Educational Center (ISEC), the initiative will serve as the pilot launch of a high-latitude educational program.The summer school will bring together Russian students and participants from non-Arctic countries. The academic program will feature a series of lectures by Russian and international experts covering international legal aspects of Arctic development, scientific cooperation in the region, the current state of international relations in the Arctic and prospects for their development.“Amid rising international tensions, the militarization of the archipelago by Norway, and Spitsbergen’s involvement in the orbit of NATO’s military and political planning, Russia is relying on soft power and international cooperation. This project not only strengthens the position of the Russian scientific and educational community in the region but also demonstrates Russia’s commitment to building international cooperation in the Arctic on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests,” Irina Strelnikova said.As part of the program, students will work on practical case studies related to scientific cooperation in the Arctic, international Arctic tourism, and the media strategy of the international scientific and educational center. Students will also be encouraged to develop proposals aimed at strengthening cooperation within the ISEC framework and enhancing the long-term sustainability of Russia’s presence on Spitsbergen.The project is being implemented by the Center for Interdisciplinary Arctic Studies at the National Research University - Higher School of Economics, with support from Arcticugol Trust state-owned company and the Northern Sustainable Development Forum.
