The region is continuing to modernize its railway track and related infrastructure, while also expanding the capacity of the Russian Railways network in the northwestern direction, particularly along the Obozerskaya–Malenga section, according to the Arkhangelsk Region government press service following a meeting between Governor Alexander Tsybulsky and Northern Railway Director Rashid Saibatalov.
According to the regional authorities, investment in railway infrastructure has totaled approximately 21 billion rubles over the past three years. An additional 2.42 billion rubles is expected to be invested by the end of 2026.
“The condition of the railway infrastructure has a direct impact on transport connectivity across Pomorye, the operation of key industrial enterprises, the performance of the Port of Arkhangelsk, and, ultimately, the quality of life of local residents,” Alexander Tsybulsky emphasized.
During the first five months of 2026, export shipments increased by 5.1 percent, driven primarily by cargo flows to the Far East and southern seaports. The Arkhangelsk Region’s main export commodities include timber, construction materials, containerized cargo, paper products, and industrial raw materials. Forestry enterprises alone dispatch around 700 container trains by rail each year.
As Rashid Saibatalov noted during the meeting, Northern Railway is actively expanding cooperation not only with major industrial enterprises but also with small and medium-sized businesses. Since the beginning of the year, 30 companies in the region have started using rail freight services for the first time.
