The Nenets Autonomous Area will annually hold ethnographic expeditions involving specialists from the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera). The understanding was reached as part of the cooperation agreement between the region administration and the museum on the sidelines of the SPIEF, according to the Nenets Autonomous Area Government press service.

“This agreement opens for the Kunstkamera a new page in exploring the Russian Arctic, a region that has always been in the focus of our attention. Currently, we are working on a fundamental History of the Russian Arctic and cooperation with the Nenets Autonomous Area enables us not only to refer to archive materials, but also engage in live field studies and meet with the people, for whom the Arctic is not a subject of research, but home,” noted Director of the Kunstkamera Andrei Golovnyov.

The many-year experience of a leading research center in ethnography, anthropology and in studying the cultures of the peoples of the world will also help the region in carrying out research, museum, exhibition, educational and outreach projects.

“I am sure that our cooperation with the Kunstkamera will open new opportunities for studying and preserving the unique culture of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North. We are getting ready for a large-scale renovation of exposition in the Nenets Local History Museum and expect support from our colleagues in creating modern interactive displays,” noted Governor of the Nenets Autonomous Area Irina Gekht.

The signing of the cooperation agreement will be followed by drawing up a “road map,” which will include holding of scientific conferences, roundtable discussions and workshops on the topical issues of ethnography, anthropology and history of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic. It will also provide for the possibility of probation and on-the-job training for students and young scientists of the Nenets Autonomous Area in St. Petersburg, working out of educational programs for schoolchildren and students, and release of publications for popularizing the cultural heritage of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North.
