The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) signed an agreement on designing a tunnel across the Bering Strait between Russia and the United States, said Director of the fund and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev during the 29th St Petersburg International Economic Forum.
“We signed an agreement <...>, which will let us design the tunnel. We are still calculating its economy and understand that new technologies drastically reduce its building cost,” as RIA Novosti quoted his statement.
Dmitriev also said that further steps on designing the tunnel across the Bering Strait would be clear enough by the end of the year.
Head of the RDIF announced the possibility of constructing a tunnel to connect Russia and Alaska last October. Then he noted that the project can well be carried out in less than eight years.
